Lecture series 2024
Hospice and palliative care in a rapidly changing society
The hospice movement and palliative care have developed dynamically over the last 20 years and are of crucial socio-political importance. The topics were brought to the University of Graz as a lecture in 2011 on the initiative of the then Chairman of the Hospice Association, Prof. Dr. Karl Harnoncourt. In the summer semester of 2023, the first lecture series took place at the University of Graz as a cooperation project with the Hospizverein Steiermark and the Medical University of Graz, comprising 12 lecture evenings. It was very well received by students at the University of Graz and the Medical University. Staff from the hospice sector and other medical institutions were particularly interested. The audience also included numerous other non-university people who were interested in topics that could affect them in the future.
At the end of the lecture series, there was a general desire for a continuation.
Therefore, another lecture series will take place in the summer semester of 2024, which will focus on dealing with people in their
last phase of life and their environment. The socio-political, cultural and constantly changing legal conditions as well as resource and organizational
requirements are the given basis in which palliative care takes place. This topic will also be addressed and discussed as part of the lecture series.
The lecture series will be accompanied scientifically and organizationally by Adelheid Brantner and Alexander Kollau. The topic will be illuminated by presentations from experts from various
specialist areas such as medicine, psychology, law, theology and ethics.
