Contents, qualifications and competencies
The subject of the bachelor's degree programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences is drugs and medicinal products and related aspects. It is a strongly interdisciplinary field consisting of various subjects within the natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology) as well as sub-fields of medicine (e.g. hygiene). The study imparts basic knowledge about the development, composition, preparation and extraction of medicinal substances from animate and inanimate nature, about quality assurance, composition, preparation, storage, as well as about the biological effect and safe use of medicinal products. In laboratory practice, students acquire fundamental practical skills in addition to theoretical knowledge. Beyond the technical qualifications, they develop soft skills important for the professional world, such as teamwork, oral and written communication skills. The bachelor's degree programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences is intended as a basic education in which the knowledge required for a career start, for example in analytical and diagnostic laboratories or in the pharmaceutical industry, is imparted. Building on this, a scientific deepening and specialization can be acquired within the framework of a relevant Master's programme.
Expected learning outcomes
Graduates of the Bachelor's programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences have basic scientific knowledge in the most important subfields of Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as in related fields. Through their education, they are able to apply important databases and specialized literature as well as scientific ways of thinking. In addition, they are aware of the potential ethical, societal and economic implications of their field and excel in the responsible handling of biological and chemical agents.
Further information can be found at the study portal of the University of Graz.
Occupational fields and career opportunities
Pharmaceutical research and development is made up of a wide range of disciplines, which is why there are also a number of different fields of work and activity. The Bachelor's degree programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences leads to a first university degree with professional qualifications that imparts a broadly structured range of competencies and thus prepares students for activities in a wide variety of fields.
Relevant fields of occupation and activity are, for example:
- Pharmaceutical research in public and private institutions
- Pharmaceutical and chemical industry
- Analytical and diagnostic laboratories
- Health authorities
The Bachelor's degree programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences does not qualify students to practice independently as pharmacists.
